START A BOYCOTT AND JOIN THE CLUB

Photobucket
Soooo, introduce me to the Boycotts, who does what?
Stina Twee sings while Josef K plays guitar & David Dunsmuir plays bass as Graham Young drums.
And how long have you been together?
We played our first gig last summer so have been together for a bit over a year.

The name; Boycotts -how did you come up with that?
There was a sign in the QMU shop promoting a Nestle Boycott so the idea came from that.

And are you signed to a Label? If so, who?
We don't have a record deal but we do have a publishing deal with What If Music/Sony Atv which allowed us to release our 'Start a Boycott' E.P in August.
Your debut E.P was released in August of this year I believe? Where is it available to buy and how did you find the process of recording it? challenging, a fun one etc etc
You can grab one of the limited physical copies of the E.P from Avalanche Records in Glasgow or at any of our upcoming gigs. Alternatively you can download it from iTunes, Napster & eMusic. We had a lot of fun recording the E.P the engineer/producer Andy Miller was great to work with and it was a really relaxed process as we spaced the recording into four sessions between January and May. The most challenging part was getting the E.P mastered & packaged in time and then organizing the launch @ ABC 2.

Your song "Luella and Lies" is featured in the Scottish horror film Dark Nature. Very exciting, so how did that come about?
Mandragora Productions, the company that produced the film, sent us an email and asked if they could use a clip of 'Luella and Lies' for one of the scenes in their film 'Dark Nature'. Obviously we said yes. It was quite exciting going to the premiere at Cineworld a few months ago and getting to see the film for the first time. Another local band Zoey Van Goey also had some of their songs featured in the film which was cool.
You have a few gigs in the pipeline for November/December, is there plans for a further Tour in 2010?
Yeah we played two Scottish tours this summer so we will be trying to do another couple of Scottish tours next year along with our first English dates and maybe even a festival appearance.

When playing the songs from your E.P live has one song garnered more of a reaction from the crowds than others?
Strangely all four of the songs on the E.P have had a good response from different people. Overall I reckon 'Luella and Lies' and 'Scarper!' get the best live reaction but some people love 'A Lesson and Gravity' and 'No-A-Yo-Yo' as well.
What makes the Boycotts a band people should go see live?
I think that now that we're more used to playing live our performances are getting tighter and more cohesive. A lot of our new songs are more energetic and aggressive and I think that comes across when we play. Also our song writing is constantly improving and evolving so it would be very unusual for somebody to see us play the same set twice.

Talk me through some artists that inspire you as a band?
As a band there are very few bands or artists that we all like, one live dvd we have watched a lot recently is 'Stop Making Sense' by Talking Heads. If you havn't seen it watch it NOW! Individually Graham and Dave have a similar music taste with both of them liking bands like Rage Against the Machine and The Mars Volta. Stina and I both like The Cure and The Smiths but again don't really agree on much else. I think this diversity is probably what makes us work as a band.
And where do you hope to see yourselves as a band in one year from now?
Stina and I will hopefully graduate from uni in June so after that I think we will probably begin to take the band a bit more seriously. I would hope that we will have a few more tours under our belt and would have released a second E.P or a couple of singles. The most important thing at the moment is really just working on our songwriting and trying to develop that as far as we possibly can.
Are there plans for an album?
Not yet I think it will be a while before we do an album. I think to many bands are rushed into recording albums by managers and labels and we want to try and avoid being forced into that situation.
Lastly, which artist or band would the Boycotts happily boycott, and do you have any recommends that folk should check out?
Kanye West, "He's a jackass." But do check out: Findo Gask, The King Hats & Young States.
