Interview with Eisuke Negishi

Hello Eisuke! Would you like to introduce yourself to my readers?
Hi, my name is Eisuke Negishi, born in Japan. And I am a photographer!
How would you describe an average day in the life of you?
Checking out e-mail, reading the news, thinking about ideas, having food, listening to music etc.....
Um, that kinda sounds like a holiday day to me Eisuke?! The Life of a Photographer, eh?
I’d like to hear a little about your experience of working for Nick Knight and SHOWstudio?! How did the opportunity come about? What was it like assisting Nick? Etc etc. What a dream start to anyone’s career!
I think it was 2003, I sent an e-mail to SHOWstudio so many times, and then luckily heard from a contact from Nick Knight's office for an interview. But at that time I could not speak English at all so I missed the chance to be his assistant. After that I decided to go to English language school. Then early 2005, I emailed his office again, finally started working with him as his assistant and at the same time also worked for SHOWstudio. Basically I was in SHOWstudio, and then when Nick had a shoot I went to his studio to assist. But after a year later, my visa had expired, so I needed to go back to Japan sadly.
Oh that’s terrible. But at least you can speak English now, that’s something.
So working with a master of Photography like Nick Knight must influence you in a lot of different ways, right?
Yes, very much. Learnt lots of things.
What were some of the highlights for you while working at SHOWstudio?
It was project called Bring&Buy. That was a fantastic project I think.
Let’s go back in time to when Eisuke was a child. How would you describe yourself as a little boy?
Loved watching TV, playing computer games, spending time with friends etc.....
And do you think much has changed in you as you’ve gotten older?
Yes, when I was 15 years old I had changed a lot. Was really interested in British music and fashion, especially loved Brit pop culture very much indeed!!!
Your style Eisuke; I absolutely adore how the people you photograph quite literally POP out of the picture, like seriously, POP! And everyone looks so gloriously edible! How long did it take you to find your signature style?
Thank you so much Portis! I think when I started using a digital camera. So I would say from late 2007 or 2008.
And how does one actually go about finding their style when thousands of photographers’ work is so accessible by only one click on the internet these days. What would be the organic approach, or do you think we all just take from each other?
I think that if the internet or digital things work for it, it would be good things.
Yes, yes I think so.
What do you think your photographs say about you?
I think my photographs say what I wanna do or what I wanna tell someone about myself.
So in this photo you just want to get lost in your sweater?
I can totally relate btw.
Can you talk about any fun projects you are working on at the moment?
I am photographing people as a personal work which you can see from my website!
#Love! (and littered all over this interview)
Working with Nicola Formichetti for his online store must have been fun?
Yes, very much indeed and so excited, great time!!!!!!!!
Which Photographers working today get you excited, and why?
It is bit tricky, because there are so many great photographers in the world!
Where do you find inspiration on a day to day basis?
I think I got inspiration from Japanese animation and Animation's character figures very much!! Because my impression of animation is like a film and the figure is like a statue.

If the world were coming to an end and you were allowed one last kiss, who would be lucky enough to land on your lips?
It would be my girlfriend. But I do not have a girlfriend at the moment.....
That is probably one of my favourite answers in an interview like ever.
Which item of clothing in your closet gets most wear and how would you describe your personal style?
From uniqlo and second hand stores. I prefer wearing black and simple clothes.
Do you have a list of personalities in your head that you would love to work with over the course of your career?
I do not have a list, but as long as I have a chance, I would love to work with ‘them’ very much.
Okay, fair enough, keep secrets from me why don’t you.

Would you like to ask Portis Wasp a question?
What are you interested in most at the moment?
At the moment I am most interested in my blog. I love that I can post whatever I like on it, discover new artists and photographers, and interview some amazingly talented people (like yourself) so yeah, at the moment I pretty much don’t have any spare time for anything else but my blog.
A guilty pleasure you can’t seem to quit?
If your house went up in flames (no-one gets hurt by the way) but you only had time to save one item what would you grab and why?
I don't know.......maybe mobile phone? I can contact someone.
That is a very sensible answer Eisuke. I would have saved my Buffy boxset.

Well we have come to an ending of sorts Eisuke. It has been an absolute pleasure to have you and your work feature on my blog. Thank you sir, and good luck with your future projects. I have no doubt you will continue to assault my senses and then some.
