The Moth & The Mirror – ‘Honestly, This World’ |Album Review

Everyone I Know must listen to Everyone I Know. The rest of the album takes a backseat to the opening track on The Moth & The Mirror’s debut album, Honestly, This World. I’m being honest here when I say it is amazing. Like, top ten uk singles chart amazing! And this is a song that appears on the same album as previous single releases from the band, Fire and Germany. Oh how I love them too but I would have loved this debut even more if there’d been 10 different remixes of Everyone I Know and a bonus music video. Now that would have killed me all kinds of dead.

I of course wrote that first paragraph before I’d played song two, Soft Insides. Which sounds like it would have provided a nice slow dance or two for Buffy and Angel at The Bronze. Inspiration much? The jury is out, all I know is that my insides are now nice and soft like a sponge and I am soaking up every snarl, riff, baby voice and clatter from the band I discovered (I didn’t literally find them in a box under the stairs) in early 2010. And then Fire plays… also amazing times ten!

What I love about this record for want of a better word is that it sounds honest. And it doesn’t sound like it wants nor needs to be liked. The Moth & The Mirror come across as an incredibly confident and self assured band over the ten tracks that shape Honestly, This World, cocky just a little, but it is a swagger I’m fine with. Just picture yourself cutting onions in the kitchen, lead singer Stacey Sievwright runs up to you, pulls your hair, grabs an onion from the chopping board and smashes it into your eye. That would be sore, right? And I guess a little rude. Well then she licks your eye better. Much better, right? That’s what this album feels like. A punch followed by a kiss. Something I find awfully romantic.

Germany is hard and fast and dirty, Closing Doors, the delicate morning after. This is a multi-layered record you will want to revisit. Many many layers.

The six-piece that is The Moth & The Mirror are made up of a number of musicians who dabble here and there in other Scottish bands and sounds which is all well and good and a little bit like showing off. But after listening to Honestly, This World this (whatever this is or could be) feels like something special, something that should take priority. So maybe take my advice and quit the other bands you’re in to concentrate on making this one the best Scottish band to come out of Scotland in the last year. Because honestly, this world deserves you.

Verdict: Like Duh? If you can't afford HONESTLY, THIS WORLD, steal it!
