Interview with Bryce Thompson

Hello Bryce, would you like to introduce yourself to my readers please?

Hey! My name is Bryce Thompson and I am a 29 year old South African living in the bright lights of New York!!

Talk me through an average day in the life of you?

My days are usually at the mercy of my agents. I like to start the day off fresh, an early start with a juice, followed by a daily email check to get Soul's schedule for me! There really is no average day, some days you are on an airplane or in the studio. Other days may entail a spin class and riding the tubes of NYC to various castings. As I said, routine is not common.

Now before I hit you with some super serious questions I’m afraid I’m going to need to ask for your measurements Bryce?

40L suit, 32 waist, 34 inseam, and I am 6'4.

Below is proof that Bryce's legs alone are taller than the average man.

How did you get into modelling?

I was working out in my home city, when photographer and agent Byron Keulemans approached me and asked if I would be interested in trying out for a Men’sHealth cover.  Byron then shot my first cover and placed me at an agency. This all went down at the end of 2007. I began my first season at the start of 2008.

So what prompted the move from South Africa to the New York?

My move from South Africa was prompted by my European agents belief that the next step in my career would be to move to the hardest market in the world. I'm a firm believer in the idea that without risk, there is no reward.

I’m going to state the bleedin obvious here and say your body doesn’t look like most other guys bodies! Like, not even close!!! Please don’t tell me you were born with this body and you have never seen the inside of a gym! Because that would really depress us Bryce.

Genetics is a fundamental part of my physique, but honestly, I am cautious with what I eat, and I am very dedicated to living a healthy life, with regular, intense workouts!!

'Intense' does sound a lot like hard work to be honest.  What would you say is the key ingredient to achieving washboard abs like yours? It would also be great if that key ingredient is 'sugar'! Jus sayin.

Sugar, or the dramatic lack of, is key. Sugar is unfortunately a luxury that I cannot indulge in very often, but I do treat myself from time to time. The key to living a lean life is to consume ample water and no more calories per day than your body needs to make it to the next day!

Hmm... *Reaches for a sachet of sugar*

So what does a typical day in the life of a model working in the industry look like?

Days are different for many models, getting to your castings, flights or bookings are obviously part of a working day, but there are plenty days where we can explore hobbies and recreational activities, be they at home or out of town.

Personally, I am an avid paintballer, and love to go to events when I have free weekends.

Below is proof that Bryce is really good at paintballing.  Not one mark on the man!

Who have been some of your favourite photographers to work with so far?

I have had the pleasure of working with many talented photographers. Richard Phibbs, Greg Vaughan, Sebastian Kim and Rick Day are just the tip of the iceberg.

Is there a photographer you would just die to work with?

As for the previous question, there are so many photographers that I am looking forward to working with. I don't know where to start; Giampaolo Sgura, Bruce Weber and Steven Klein are all on my wish list but patience is a virtue in this business.

Have you set yourself a goal or goals that you would like to achieve whilst working as a model? Like, is there that dream job, campaign or cover that you are chasing?

I have got dreams, as we all aim for the next great fragrance campaign, or to be the face of a brand that solidifies me as a top contender. But in the same breath I am happy for my friends around me as they confirm the jobs that I just mentioned. As I said, patience and humility are a huge part of making this a full time career.

Would you like to share with me a personal highlight in your career so far?

A personal highlight for me relates more towards the travel side of this industry. I was flown to Zanzibar, Tanzania for a simple lifestyle shoot and on this trip I met wonderful locals who really touched me with their love for life and family. They simplified happiness down to a level that you need to find for yourself.

What a lot of my wasps might not know is that you photograph models yourself Bryce. Is photography a medium you would like to see yourself move into in time?

I enjoy photography. I started when I was playing professional paintball, on the field and during interviews, after that the portraits of the wonderful children in Zanzibar got me hooked onto capturing powerful images. I now pursue my love for photography in New York, shooting the city and capitalizing on the opportunity to work with models from around the world.

Here is a selection of photographs Bryce has taken.  You can visit his tumblr here.

What does standing behind a camera rather than in front of it offer you that modelling might not?

It offers me a chance to direct and create. I thoroughly enjoy being a part of someone else's vision but I would like to create my own too.

A guilty pleasure you can’t seem to quit?

Beautiful women, red wine and nutella.

All at once, obviously.  A song that makes your heart skip a beat?

Can’t say I have one, sadly. But if I hear it I will be sure to let you know!

Which item of clothing in your closet gets most wear and why?

Currently, my Canada Goose winter jacket. South Africa never gets as cold as NY has been recently. So wrapping up every day is essential. Just for winter!!

What happens next?

The next move is collaboration between myself and Soul Artist Management. I have faith that the future is as exciting as my last year has been living in NY.  I look forward to working with some amazing photographers, and growing as a person!

Thanks Bryce!
