Interview with Specular

Hello Specular! Would you like to introduce yourself to my readers?
Hey everyone, I'm a fashion and portrait photographer, specialising in menswear, based in the north east at the moment (soon to be London), but travel all over.

Talk me through an average day in the life of you?
Every day is different really, that's one of the things I love, but the last few years have been pretty much shoot, edit, sleep repeat, with less of the sleep part, and hardly any down time which wipes you out after a while.  I'm starting to learn that time off is important, so trying to add that in to my day/week now, gradually. (lol)

Describe yourself as a child?
Fairly quiet but sociable, very arty (my dads an artist, so I grew up around arty people which was great) always making/building stuff, loved to dance about to Michael Jackson, even had the hat, thank god camera phones didn't exist then.  I loved films, I still remember seeing ET on the big screen when I was 5 or so.

Has much changed now that you are fully grown?
I'm a fair bit taller, about 6'7 lol, and a lot more sociable, love meeting new people, which is possibly why I got the nickname BFG (Big Friendly Giant). I'm still a bit of a film nerd, I normally go about once a week, I've replaced making 3d stuff with photography, and only really dance about after several shots of vodka. I think in a lot of ways I'm still the same though.

So I have to ask, what made you decide on the name Specular?
I studied 3D computer animation at Uni, before I found my love of photography, and it was a term used a lot in CGI.  You would change the Specularity of a material to make it either matt or glossy/shiny, and it controlled how light bounced back.

When I started my own freelance company I was doing 3D computer visualisations as well as photography, and Specular kinda stuck. It means 'perfect reflection of light' so I just ran with it.  Also, there were a lot of 'Chris Davis Photography' sites out there, so Specular stood out.

Have you ever make the mistake of introducing yourself to a client as Spectacular? *Jazz Hands*
Ha ha, no, but quite a few other people have.  Seems to happen less now though.

How would you describe your photographic style?
I think I have two that sometimes overlap.  I love to shoot glossy, sharp, bold images, with a bit of a cinematic feel to them, but I also love very simple, natural looking black and white, caught in the moment kinda shots, I seem to flick between the two depending on the brief.

What do you think your photographs say about you?
That's a tough one, I think it says I watch too many films, lol, and possibly shows my interest in the human form, possibly stemming from when I used to do a lot of sculpture.  I love working with toned models, the forms and the shapes the body and muscles make, and how light can change how its seen/perceived.

Where do you draw inspiration from for your work?  I mean, obviously, now that you’ve seen my blog it will inevitably become your primary source of inspiration but what I’d like to know is what inspired you before I came into your life?
Ha ha, exactly, my inspiration is sorted now. ;-)  I think first off it was the Calvin Klein campaigns, when I was a teenager they were this big iconic brand, the images were everywhere, I loved the way it was shot, how raw and bold but beautiful the shoots were.  More recently its film, music, and the work of Mert and Marcus, Stephen Klein, I've always loved the images they create, and there are looots of others that would take too long to list.

What has been one of your favourite projects to work on – and why?
Probably the last time I was in NYC, I shot three editorials, one in Brooklyn with stylist Adrian Manuel, and the other two in Manhattan, upper east side, with stylist Timothy Jon Baga. I absolutely love NY, and always enjoy shooting location over there, just so many great backdrops. Tim was great to work with also, he used to be a campaign stylist for Calvin Klein (now with Reed Krackoff) he had a huge wardrobe of Calvin Klein clothes, so we just raided his wardrobe and shot on the roof of his apartment with a model from AIM, I was in my element.

You live in Newcastle. Are you a Geordie? Also, have you ever photographed any of the Geordie Shore cast?
Ha ha, erm, kind of, I'm from Durham, so I'm sort of a watered down Geordie, with hardly any accent, sorry to disappoint.  I did a mini shoot with one of the newer cast, but turned down a bigger shoot as most of my friends said they'd disown me if I did. (lol)

I’d love to hear some Geordie slang. Give me your best line!
I'm the worlds worst Geordie, I sound more like an American most of the time, and use 'dude' far too much.

Unacceptable mate. Ahm not even a Geordie an the dialect just flows oot of me leik Evian.

A guilty pleasure you can’t seem to quit?
Junk tv, currently watch Teen Wolf, The Carrie Diaries etc while doing my edits. :-S

If the world was coming to an end and you were allowed one last kiss, who would be lucky enough to land on your lips?
Erm, Henry Cavill, ha ha.   Lil bit of a crush on the guy after 'Man of Steel'.

Which flavour of ice cream best describes your personality?
Oh god, erm, I would have to cheat and say an ice-cream sundae, big and slightly childish.

Would you like to ask Portis Wasp a question?
Who would you most like to interview?

Right now, there is no one in the world I'd like to be interviewing more than you Mr Spectacular!  But should you collapse during the next question I have Matt Bomer on speed dial.  I'd just really like to know if he knows how pretty he is?

What question have you never been asked in an interview but are not so secretly hoping to be asked one day?
That would be 'would you like to come live in my NYC studio apartment?' I can dream, lol.

Oh I would mate, but my apartment is being remodelled at the moment.  Bye!
