NSFW: Another Interview with Dylan Rosser

Adam Von Rothfelder for Dylan Rosser's 'Loft' Book

Loft is a new photographic project that you shot in a loft space over the course of four days in New York last year and will now be printed as a limited edition book. What inspired the project?
I think the space inspired the project. When I travel I usually do a few shoots here and there, but I really wanted to take advantage of the nice location and so I was trying to get as many guys to shoot as possible in those few days. First I thought it might make a nice editorial for tMf magazine but I ended up taking so many images I thought it needed to be something more. Then I had dinner with photographer Rick Day and he put me in touch with Adam Von Rothfelder who was staying with him at the time. I met Adam and he was on board to get naked for my camera. It was while shooting him that I began to formulate the idea of creating something more special and more collectable.

Only 100 copies of Loft will be printed and you have stated it will NEVER be reprinted. Why have you decided to keep the publication limited to such a small print number?
These days everything is so mass produced and copied, stolen, posted online, etc. it's hard to give value to images these days because usually you can just find it for free online somewhere. I guess I wanted to think of this as a limited edition print that a collector might buy and display in their home.

'Loft' Photography Book by Dylan Rosser

The 100-page book features tattooed model Adam Von Rothfelder on the cover and boasts uncensored full frontal shots of the handsome gent within its pages. What made you choose Adam for the cover?
He was partly the inspiration for the book so it only seems fair. I know he has a big fan base too which always helps. Our shoot was also the longest and I have so many images of him.

Will fans be happy with the shots of him in his birthday suit?
I hope so. The shots are tasteful and so anyone expecting him to be posing provocatively are not gonna find it here. Having said that, there are some erect models in the book.

What’s your favourite Adam Von Rothfelder tattoo?
Well there are so many to choose from! I think I like his name across his chest. I'm not really one for symbols and deep meanings so for me a name is what it is.

Would you say the Loft is a departure in tone from previous Dylan Rosser publications or merely a natural continuation of your familiar style?
Except for some of the shots in the shower most of the images are all natural light which is a bit of a departure for me. I think the book has a slightly different look from my others and it gels well together because of the setting.

Do you have a favourite photo from the project?
It’s hard to choose favourites. I will say that I am particularly happy with this b&w shot of Alvaro. His face is everything.

Will you be sharing content online to accompany the release of the book?
Only a small number of images will be released. I want the owners of the book to feel that they have some special images that no one else has.

What happens next?
Onto new things I guess. I have recently moved to Ibiza and am trying to simplify my life and trying to get away from studio shoots. I am working on new stuff but it might be some time before any of it sees the light of day.

The new issue of tMf magazine, which is edited by Dylan and features a selection of contributions from various photographers as well as his own work, is out now, and inside the issue I chat to Mr. Rosser in more details about his new coffee table book with Adam Von Rothfelder.

Not that you should need any more persuading to purchase a copy, but here is a cheeky wee preview of some of the spreads you can expect to find within it's pages.
