Interview with Matt Giesler

Hey Matt! Would you like to introduce yourself to my readers?
My name is Matt Giesler and I'm a full-time model with Soul Artist Management. I'm from South Africa, but currently working and living a pretty good life in New York City.

Talk me through an average day in the life of you?
My typical day starts with breakfast which is usually avocado, banana, eggs and hasbrowns with honey'd up black coffee. After this ritual is over and i'm done checking for waves at the Rockaways, I'll head off to work and appointments - always riding my bike to get myself from casting to casting. Midday might see me enjoy a fine almond latte somewhere and the day usually ends with a socialization of some sorts - be that an invite to something, or a simple chill with amigos.

How were you scouted?
Somehow someone got hold of a pic of me making sushi...

Haha, and were you surprised by an agency getting in touch or have you always known that you are ridiculously good looking?
I was quite surprised. But I've always been confident in my cullinary skills and I thought they must really just like sushi! But to be honest, I really had no idea about whether or not I was good looking.

What would you say is the main misconception the public have about being a male model?

That they're not intelligent, most of my male model friends are highly intelligent and have worked hard to be where they are.
What aspect of the job surprised you the most once you started working in the industry?
How much I love traveling! I'd never been on a plane before I began modeling. My first trip saw me doing a six month stint through Asia - modeling, traveling and surfing in all kinds of crazy places. I met some of the most incredible people on that trip.

Sounds brilliant!

Having shot with many fashion photographers, do you have a favourite you enjoyed working with?
Yes, hands down Bruce Weber. He creates a great atmosphere on set and gives you free range to play into it. I was on set once where he had a masseuse, a violonist and a personal guru all working together to stimulate a story.

Bloody hell.

What has been one of the most memorable jobs to work on?
My Birthday this year was spent up top of the Swiss mountain, Matterhorn - sunning out and shooting the Vogele campaign. It was memorable because it was my first time on a glacier, let alone even seeing one. The fact that I could also hike and ski over to Northern Italy for breakfast kind of blew my mind!

I think I need to learn how to make sushi!!! How do you like to keep that model body of yours fit?
I've never been a member of a gym, but you can always find me surfing, skating, riding a bike and just having fun with it. Every now and then ill pick up a freeweight at home or at a friend's gym, but now that I'm living in NYC, shredding the deep end of the pool at pier 62 skatepark takes preference over everything else - especially surfing (waves here are kind of small). Being a pole vaulter also played a big part in my abdominal muscle memory - that and playing rugby my whole life.

Is there an exercise you not so secretly look forward to when you find yourself in a gym?
Treadmills and stationary bikes are just not for me. I guess I could be considered a purest when it comes to exercise. Why not run or ride to the gym and get your cardio in that way? My mate, Rodger Frampton runs his whole business based on outdoor workouts.

Aside from modelling, how else do you like to spend your time?
I'd consider myself an adventurous person and don't let myself stay stationary for too long. I'm always wondering what's next or where and how I can get out and do something new. I spent a portion of the past year driving through the deserted West Coast of South Africa in my 65 Merc200 with my best friend and our surfboards.

A guilty pleasure you can't seem to quit?
Ice cream… I can't seem to keep away from a quality tub of that cookie dough!

Which flavour of ice cream best describes your personality, and why?
Rum and raisin with a white chocolate, peanut butter swirl. All of the different flavors encompass my personality - part pirate, breakdancer, surfer and a bit of a nut...

If the world was coming to an end and you were allowed one last kiss, who would be lucky enough to land on your lips?
I'm seeing someone pretty special right now... Lets just say she's a great kisser.

How do you like your eggs in the morning?
Served with avocado and anywhere close to a beach with waves.

So what happens next for you?
Head in the clouds answer: I absolutely kill it at the modeling game, buy some properties and sail the seven seas on a yacht, only stopping to take photos of exotic cultures and surf remote waves.
Real talk: I continue to kill it at the modeling game, live in NYC and use what I earn to finance sustainable green transport solutions and fund progressive art projects. I'm currently planning some creative photography projects with my one of my best friends, John Beecroft, and have a few more creative adventures lined-up for next year. Lets see where that takes me!

Thanks Matt!
