Interview with Cole Monahan

Hey Cole!  Would you like to introduce yourself to my readers?
Of course! I'm Robert Cole Monahan. I am 22 years old and recently moved to Miami from Lenoir City, Tennessee to start my modeling career. I have a passion for fitness and nutrition, and modelling and acting are quickly growing on me.

Talk me through an average day in the life of you?
I can't say there is such a thing as an average day for a model because of how spontaneous the business can be due to castings, shoots, and frequent visits to Elite. If I have a clean slate for the day though, my day starts at 6am. I make breakfast, read, and plan my priorities for the day. There is always something to get done or improve on. Afterwards I run to the gym, lift, run back, and do sprints. Then I'll prepare my meals for the day in case something comes up and I cook if I need to. I cook my food in bulk for the week and pretty much live out of Tupperware, ha ha. After that, I will either run errands, go to the beach, or hangout with my roommate Connor. Later in the day, I start my 2nd workout which is some form of cardio. The last couple hours of the day are usually up in the air. Looking for new poses, practicing facial expressions, or just plain relaxing, enjoying the fact I was successful for the day. You can call it a boring and uptight lifestyle, (I'm sure many would), but I really enjoy it and am living my dream. I moved here to start a long, successful modeling/acting career and I plan to do just that.

So how did you get into modelling?
I met Cindy Swicegood in Knoxville, TN and started modeling for her agency 18KARAT. Soon after, I moved to Miami and began my career with Elite.

I guess it really was meant for you though as you’ve had a really exciting start to your career! What have been some of your highlights so far?
Thank you! I appreciate that. I would have to say working with these great women and modelling icons Christie Brinkley, Brooke Shields, Elaine Irwin, Stephanie Seymour, and Pat Cleveland for Barney's New York is definitely at the top. I have also had the pleasure of working with professional polo athlete Nacho Figueras for Ralph Lauren's Blue Fragrance commercial, and recently returned from my first international job which took place in Punta Cana.

I also see you’re the new face of Charlie by Matthew Zink!  Can you tell me about the shoot?
Thanks again! It was my first time in NYC and I had a great experience! I arrived to the studio early in the morning and was warmly welcomed by Matthew Zink and Adam Clay who was our hairstylist. Matthew and I discussed the history of Charlie, how it has transformed into the successful business it is today, and what they are looking for to take it even further. We shot for a few hours, had lunch, got back to work, and finished up around 8pm. All while having a great time getting to know each other and enjoying each other's company. I left feeling like a job was well done and I am so thankful for the opportunity. I hope for many more!

I'm pretty confident for you.

My good friend Scott Teitler recently photographed you for a hockeytastic cover story. Is it a sport you play?  You looked like you knew your way around a hockey stick!
That was a really fun and creative shoot. No, I've actually never played hockey! I guess the secrets out now... ha ha, busted! I have had a little experience skating though, so that definitely helped.

You’ve shot with Scott a few times now.  What do you enjoy the most when shooting with Mr Teitler?
I don't think I could narrow that down to one thing. It is ALWAYS a pleasure shooting with Scott. To work well with a photographer requires chemistry. Scott and I have that chemistry both as people and model and photographer. I love knowing every time we shoot together we are going to take some amazing photos and at the end of the day I always end up learning something new about myself.

Is there any advice he has given you that you try to put into practice when working with other photographers?
Definitely.  Just on my first day shooting with Scott I learned about better posture, how to trim my facial hair to make my jaw appear more defined, and how to angle my body several different ways for the best possible photo.  All of which I still use today.

As we can see, you’ve got it all going on in the body front but I imagine it’s something you work really hard for, right? What’s the one exercise you secretly look forward to in the gym, and what would you say is the key to keeping fit?
Thank you.  It is work, but it's what I enjoy. I would have to say incline bench press or squats. Those are both areas I've always needed to see more improvement in. The key to staying fit is persistence and diet. Of course working out matters, but if you don't have either of those first, it's going to be tough to get the body you're working for.

Pretend you’re not yourself for a moment but are looking at one of your photos. What would you say is your best feature?
I would say my smile. I get more compliments on that than anything.

Looking forward, what would you like to achieve with your modelling?
I would like to establish a large clientele, HUGE campaigns, and a long term career. Even becoming the face of the modelling industry one day would be on my list.

Is modelling something you would still like to be doing in say five years from now or do you have other career goals in mind?
Yes! I'm in this for the long haul. I would also like to cross over into acting in television and movies as well.

When you’re not posing, how do you like to spend your time?
At home I played a little guitar and plan on picking it back up again soon. I enjoy reading and most of all doing everything I can to stay healthy and fit.

If you could have any superpower for 24 hours, what would you choose and how would you spend the day?
This is a tough one. I've got to go with flying. There is so much of the world I haven't seen and I'm dying to get out there and explore it. I want to see it all!

Are you a 'sleep on the left or the right side of the bed' kind of guy?
I'm more of a sprawl out in the middle and take up the whole bed kind of guy, ha ha. I guess left if I had to pick one though.

What happens next?
I keep taking it a day at a time, doing everything I can each day to establish myself as a successful model and one day actor. I feel very fortunate for my career to have started off as well as it has, and I am staying hopeful for many more opportunities.

Thanks Cole!
